The breakdown of communities that's happened in the past 50 years (described in detail here) has left the modern at-home mom with five key pieces missing from her day-to-day life.
With
the social pressure that comes with tightly-knit communities
and the physical pressures of simply trying to survive, running
a household in centuries past was more like being an employee
than being a CEO. You didn't have much choice about what you
had to do on a given day. Laundry was a full sunrise-to-sunset
day of work; preparing each meal took at least an hour; you
made almost every article of clothing for your husband, yourself
and your children.
These days we have plenty of work to do, but it's not as
critical and doesn't take as long. Yes, I need to do the laundry;
but if I don't my husband can throw a load in on the weekend.
I need to cook; but if I don't we'll grab takeout. We need
clothes; I buy them at Target or the mall. There are many,
many things I need to do to have a pleasant, well-run household.
But there is very little I need to do to simply survive
on a day to day basis.
And that's where leadership comes in. These days, the happy
housewife is the entrepreneurial housewife. Your community
isn't telling you what to do. Crushing survival demands aren't
telling you what to do. You're free to succeed (or fail) by
your own devices. Think like an entrepreneur. Think like a
CEO. In every area of your life, lead.
