The breakdown of communities that's happened in the past 50 years (described in detail here) has left the modern at-home mom with five key pieces missing from her day-to-day life.
People
are used to having goals handed to them. Employees have goals
set for them by their bosses; people of previous generations
had goals set for them by their environment ("don't starve
to death" being a popular one). But when you stay home
with children these days you're on your own. You can sit on
the couch and watch TV and eat Bon-Bons and you won't get
fired or starve to death.
As a modern at-home mom, you're forced into the CEO mindset,
for better or worse. Like a CEO, nobody is looking over your
shoulder to tell you what to do. Nobody is going to tell you
what to accomplish by next month, let alone the rest of your
life. You must set your own goals and keep yourself motivated
to meet them. It's a difficult thing to do, but the good news
is that the sky's the limit. You're not confined by the whims
of a manager or the pressures of an industry.
