Step 4: Commit to Getting the Job Done

Coming up with big ideas and exciting goals is easy. Doing something about it is hard.

I can't emphasize this enough: In order to break out of the "just getting by" mentality and become CEO of your life, you must get in the habit of setting your own deadlines and keeping them -- even if you're no longer excited about it or the vision has changed. The CEO of a company couldn't keep announcing big plans for her company and then constantly change her mind or decide that she didn't want to do that anymore, and neither can you.

Set reasonable but challenging deadlines for yourself, put them on the calendar and hit them, just like you would if they were given to you by a boss. Even if you couldn't care less about that project anymore and loathe the thought of it, discipline yourself to get it done just like you would if you were in the workforce.

If your long-term vision for your life or your definition of your "blue flame" changes, that's fine. It probably will. But you'll have to wait until you finish your current Three Month Deadline project (from Step 3) to start taking action on the new vision.

Every time you finish a project toward your goals, especially if it was one you lost interest in at some point along the way, your motivation will increase. It'll be more fun than ever to dream big because you trust yourself to make it happen. That inner voice that says, "Yeah, right, like you'll ever get around to that," will be silenced.

Action Item
Revisit your Three Month Deadline from Step 3. Reaffirm your commitment to do this. Tell your husband or friends that you're going to do it. Commit to yourself that you will finish this, even if you lose interest. And get started on your deadline for tomorrow.
